Snowshoeing on New Year's Eve

Last night we got 6 and 1/2 inches of new snow on top of the base leftover from our pre-Christmas storms. I went out on my snowshoes yesterday afternoon for the first time in years. The snow was dirty, hard and crusty, but it was warm out and it felt great to be outside in the fresh air. This morning everything was pristine again and light flakes were still drifting down. I was the first human to make tracks down to the meadow and back today. It was silent and lovely.

Another half-foot is predicted for tomorrow night. This is like the winters we had when I was a kid. It feels right.
